Physical Security - Guarding

The Role of the MPA Professional Security Officer:

We perform functions similar to those of police, but with limitations, and only on private property we patrol. Private security guards and police support each other in many ways. Police provide information on crime trends, wanted persons, lost of stolen property, etc.. In turn, private security provides information to police and act as their "eyes and ears" in places they don't normally patrol.

Examples of private security guard duties:

  • Checking and searching incoming and outgoing vehicles.
  • Checking identification of employees entering/leaving facilities.
  • Control and record of visitors.
  • Public relations - assisting and giving direction to visitors.
  • Traffic and car park management for employees and visitors.
  • Locking and re-opening facilities as required.
  • Management of alarms and fire control systems.
  • Turning on/off machinery equipment according to safety regulations.
  • Constant access to emergency telephone numbers (police, fire, ambulance, staff
    emergency contacts).
  • Inspection/patrol of facilities.
  • Report writing for investigation of security violations.
  • Emergency first aid - CPR.
  • Defensive actions against physical threat.
  • Liaison with police, fire, and medical services.
  • Flood control.
  • Preventing and controlling workplace violence.
  • Screening for drug abuse or related crime.
  • Investigations.
